Just how many songs refer to gambling? The obvious choices are Loser and Deal, but i'm "betting" close to 20 tunes reference gambling. Who can make a definitive list?

Stagger Lee.
"Billy D'Lyons threw a lucky dice and won Stagger Lee's Stetson hat"!
After that things went bad between Stagger Lee & Billy D'Lyons.

I just noticed that from "my" early era to the "Americana Era" (Beaut/Wor/Euro) they transition from etheral/esoteric to the more mundane/daytoday/down&dirty, don't they? (ie, from "what does it all mean?" to "play the cards, buddy")...if that isn't too great an over-simplification...althugh, yeah, I guess Hunter is using the card playing as metaphor moreso than just straight up descriptors of life.

I don't think you simplify overmuch at all. Workingman's definitely marked the transition from the (fairly) pure psychedelic phase into the psychedelic Americana of the early 70s.

OK, picking up with S&R, any more?

"Loser
Deal
Dire Wolf
Stagger Lee: "lucky dice"
Me and My Uncle
Tennessee Jed: "went down to play the slot machine"
Doin' that Rag: "One eyed jacks and the deuces are wild"
Candyman "come on boys and gamble..."
Half Step: "rolling loaded dice...
Ramble on Rose: "sitting plush with a royal flush.."
Scarlet Begonias: "to open and too cool to bluff"
Truckin: "once told me you got to play your hand..."

DDBlues: "Dupree come out with a losing hand"

Stretch?

Stella Blue: "When all the cards are down"
CCSun: "like a diamond-eye Jack"
TJed: "Went down to play the slot machine"

Revel, my friend, revel. It's on In the Dark, an album which I think we'd all agree wasn't one of their finest outings. As I recall Stones had a decent instrumental break but I haven't listened to it in years and don't have it to hand to check.

Ah, but at least the cover was better than GotoHeav, right? From white to black if I recall? Or were they both a far cry from the early era gems?

I don't think 'better' is a word that could be applied to either one; it's a coin toss as to which was the least execrable. A very far cry indeed from the glories that were Workingman's, Aoxomoxoa and Skullfuck to name a few.

I actually bought GotoHeav...80 or so? About the time I dropped out...yikes. Kids always want to get me the "second boxed set", 73 and on (after GRoad one) but I always talk them out of it, or I'd have access to all these.

I think I recall in Phil's book he says the card playing and gambling imagery in so many of the songs has more to do with some house they were all living in at one point where the people upstairs, or next door or something, were playing cards 24/7. Of course, that doesn't mean it wasn't also all symbolic ...

Ah, excellent input; as you note, not necessarily that Hunter wasn't takiing those day to day happenings and weaving much more with them...

Interesting thread; and of course, some of the card playing tunes predate/coincide with the early era (Dupre, Rag, M&MU, etc.).

The wolf came in, I got my cards, we sat down for a game
I cut my deck to the queen of spades but the cards were all the same

Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay them down

And although he gave me all his cards, I could not play his hand

When all the cards are down, there's nothing left to see

They say that Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice
